Firefighters' Skills Take Spotlight

The International Association of Fire Chiefs' annual convention opens here today alongside the Missouri Historical Society's annual Fire Engine Rally and the annual Firefighter Combat Challenge.

All three events are open to wannabe firefighters of all ages. Here is a quick rundown on today's events:

A parade of more than 200 new and vintage firetrucks and emergency vehicles will sound sirens and clang bells at 10 a.m. to signal the start of the rally.

They will circle Busch Stadium and parade up Market Street past Union Station to 20th Street. Most will be on display along Market and Chestnut streets, from Tucker Boulevard to 20th, until 4 p.m.

Missouri and Illinois firefighting teams will compete at 11 a.m. in contests of timing and ability in hose laying, bucket brigade and water fight events. Fire safety demonstrations, including freeing a victim in a wrecked car with the "jaws of life" and the rappelling of firefighters from a helicopter, will follow.

Twenty-two finalist teams in the two-day Firefighter Challenge will race against the clock in performing fire-related maneuvers. …
