Tropicana Cites Increased Cost, Drops Pba Tour Event

The on-again, off-again relationship between St. Louis and the Professional Bowlers Association Tour is off again.

Bowling's top players won't be back at Tropicana Lanes in Richmond Heights next year.

Tropicana owners Vern Santens, Tino DiFranco and Ray Bluth said the decision to drop the pro event was made for several reasons.

"One of the reasons was the PBA's asking price," DiFranco said. "The host house has to come up with money to have the event, and they raised their asking price."

Santens said the PBA had upped its event fee by $10,000, to $35,000 total.

That increase was a sticking point, especially considering the Tropicana trio's expenditure of about $600,000 this year to remodel the lanes.

"Losing money every year on the event is no fun," Santens said. "The gate the last two years was halfway reasonable. But you really need a lot of participants in the pro-am to make it work money-wise. And we just weren't getting that."
