Big Boost from Little Guys Lifts Spartans

Article excerpt

The little guys came up big for Hazelwood East High on Friday night.

Running back Ricardo Rhodes, a 5-foot-5, 165-pound bulldog running back, scored two touchdowns in the Spartans' season opener. And quarterback Jacobi Guyton, a 5-foot-10 quarterback, fired a 77-yard touchdown pass to 5-7 Alton Jones.

They helped the visiting Spartans pound Pattonville 35-17 in a Suburban North Conference game.

Area teams from Missouri are opening their season this weekend. Metro East-area squads started last weekend.

Pattonville opened the scoring Friday when Matt Kury hit Willie Robinson on an 84-yard pass play. But Hazelwood East, considered one of the early favorites in Missouri Class 5A, didn't allow another Pattonville point until the fourth quarter.

SLUH 28, Kirkwood 21: In the absence of injured quarterback John McArthur, a preseason All-American, St. Louis U. High still came up a capable quarterback. Rob Jenkins threw three TD passes, one of 11 yards to David Ries, and then 58- and 39-yarders to Tim Cuneo.

Kirkwood tied the game 21-21 with eight minutes remaining. The Pioneers were driving again until Michael Taylor intercepted a pass about six minutes later. Jenkins' 39-yard TD pass capped that winning SLUH drive with 1 1/2 minutes remaining.

Priory 32, St. Pius 24: Ryan Hurst managed to score three touchdowns for Festus St. Pius. But Priory's defense made up the difference in gaining the victory in Festus. John Mayes gave Priory a first-quarter lead when he scooped up a fumble and went 50 yards for a score. Early in the second quarter, Matt Barrett helped give the Rebels a 21-8 lead when he fell on a St. Pius fumble in the end zone.

Belleville East 30, Althoff 7: Aaron Freidenberg ran for 204 yards, scored three times, kicked three extra points and booted a 30-yard field goal to carry the Lancers at Belleville Township Stadium.

Marquette 27, Summit 12: The Marquette Mustangs enjoyed a historic night when they won at Summit, the first varsity football game for the two newest high schools in the Rockwoods School District.

Lafayette 26, McCluer 20: Deeikee Williams' 5-yard TD run gave the Lancers a home victory after Lafayette's defense held McCluer scoreless during its turn in the second-overtime round. The teams ended regulation tied 13-13, then each scored a touchdown and kicked an extra point in the first overtime round.

Lutheran North 35, Affton 19: Lutheran North literally ran into the new season on the backs of Deric Johnson and Ben Berry. They each scored two touchdowns and contributed more than half of Lutheran North's 434 yards total offense at Affton.

Berry ran six times for 98 yards, including a 49-yard TD jaunt. Johnson, who accumulated more than 1,500 yards last season, had a 75-yard TD run among his 141 yards rushing Friday. Affton quarterback Ryan Kahle passed for 189 yards and one TD. …
