Workers of the world unite around sturdy clothes, in canvas and denim, by such American companies as Dickies, Levi's, Carter's and Carhart.

Now, nearly everyone else owns a little of this so-called workwear, if only a pair of jeans.

Soon, they may own more.

Streetsmart industrial styles are the fashion trend of the moment, as elements in everything from back-to-school wardrobes to outfits seen on business types during certain corporate-casual days.

For kids, the penchant for cargo pockets, carpenter pants, overalls and jackets with heavy-duty zippers and rugged snaps has returned along with a fondness for other trends of the '70s. Rap artists, fashion models and hipsters at New York nightclubs are often seen sporting this rugged wear.

For adults, a Los Angeles menswear preview earlier this year featured enough denim, chambray and other workwear from such designers as Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, Joseph Abboud and Mossimo to bring this comment from a sponsor: "Denim and chambray are more than fabrics - they're fashion colors. …
