New Gac Setup Is Applauded by Pirates' Coach

Article excerpt

When the Gateway Athletic Conference adopted a five-game league schedule in football, a number of area coaches complained. But St. Charles coach Jim Williams wasn't one of them.

"For a smaller school like us or Duchesne, this setup's a lot better," Williams said. "For one thing, it gives us a chance to play more schools our own size and that should help prepare us for district play. And we're still facing Francis Howell and St. Charles West.

"Let's face it, a school our size has a hard time competing with schools that have enrollments of 2,000 or 2,500 students."

But the Pirates have managed to hold their own. Last year, St. Charles finished 4-6 overall and 2-5 in GAC play.

"We were blown out by Francis Howell and St. Charles West, but so were a lot of other teams," Williams said. "We lost in overtime to Howell North and Zumwalt South and we played most of the teams on our schedule tough.

"All things considered, I thought we played well last year."

The Pirates lost some key members from that squad, including All-GAC players Jeff Thorne and D.J. Brandes.

But St. Charles returns a solid nucleus that features senior captains Taronno Jones, Jason Callaway and Jesse King.

Jones, who earned second-team all-league honors on both offense and defense a year ago, is the team's top returning runner (702 yards), scorer (nine touchdowns) and defender (62 tackles, 35 assists, one sack, one fumble recovery). Jones, who is 5 feet 10 and 185 pounds, plays fullback and linebacker.

Callaway (5-8, 135) will move from receiver to quarterback, where he'll try to make use of his outstanding speed and quickness. He'll also start in the defensive backfield.

King (6-0, 162) will start at tight end and defensive end.

Other key seniors include halfback/linebacker Terrel Green (5-8, 177), halfback/defensive back Rich Kleeschulte (5-7, 150) and versatile Mike Mallinckrodt (5-8, 170). …
