Trumpeter Terence Blanchard Performs, Minus Singer

THE DOUBLE bill of trumpeter Terence Blanchard and vocalist Jeanie Bryson Wednesday night at Just Jazz ended up being an evening of Blanchard and his quartet performing without Bryson. This made the announced subject of the performance - a tribute to the legendary singer Billie Holiday - somewhat of a moot point.

After all, paying homage to one of the world's most revered vocalists without singing her lyrics would make as much sense as Michael Bolton attempting to cover a classic soul tune. But if anyone in the audience was disappointed by Bryson's absence at the beginning of the first set, they certainly gave no indication of it afterward. Blanchard, pianist Bruce Barth, drummer Troy Davis and University City native Chris Thomas on bass received a rousing ovation for their stellar work.

At Just Jazz, Blanchard began the evening with a tribute to the late Miles Davis, performing tunes associated with the trumpet legend such as "I Thought of You" and "Dear Old Stockholm. …
