MFS Intelenet wants to be the phone company for small and medium-sized businesses, providing local and long-distance service, equipment and advice on state-of-the art telecommunications.

If it succeeds, MFS Intelenet would be the closest thing around to the old Ma Bell, says Dave Wheeler, vice president and general manager.

MFS Intelenet is a subsidiary of Omaha-based MFS Communications Corp., a company that builds and operates alternative telephone networks in major cities around the country.

The company has a 40-mile fiber optic network in St. Louis and will soon complete installation of a digital switch in Maryland Heights. The company expects its total investment here to reach about $22 million.

MFS Intelenet expects to ask the Missouri Public Service Commission at some point for permission to operate a local exchange switch. It will need to be able to operate its own switch or resell local service to give businesses the full package it wants to offer. …
