Ashcroft Calls for Repeal of Tax Increase

Former Gov. John Ashcroft, the Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate, called Tuesday for the repeal of last year's federal income tax increase, saying it has cost jobs and hurt small business.

Ashcroft outlined his economic proposals after spending two hours in old clothes working on the thermal-window production line at AnPaul Window Co., 4100 Union Boulevard.

"The Democrats say they are soaking the rich, but they are impugning the ability of firms like this" to provide jobs, Ashcroft said.

Ashcroft also proposed investment tax credits for job-creating plants and equipment, special tax treatment for enterprise zones in urban areas and the creation of "regulatory waiver boards designed to relieve business from federal regulations which stifle growth in urban areas."

Ashcroft said he opposed any federal mandates that would require employers to pay for a percentage of their employees' health care coverage. And he proposed a voluntary "preferential rehiring" program for businesses to allow parents to stay home up to five years during their children's early years. …
