Pity the chain gang and officials who worked the high school football game Friday night in Hillsboro, Mo.

Then again, what better way to keep in shape than run up and down the field to keep up with St. Charles West's 43-37 victory over the Hillsboro Hawks.

St. Charles West quarterback John Ferguson played key roles in three of the game's 11 touchdowns. He had touchdown passes of 43 and 60 yards to Brandon Jett, and scored one TD himself. Mark Colegrove had touchdown runs of 60 and 50 yards, and Mike Orlando added a 68-yard scoring run for the Warriors (5-1). St. Charles West is No. 16 in the Post-Dispatch ranking of area large schools.

Hillsboro (2-4) made the score respectable with two late touchdown passes by Bill Sucharski.

Freeburg 13, Orchard Farm 6: Freeburg's Steve Wilkens, the area's leading rusher with 1,180 yards, carried 28 times for 143 yards and a touchdown. Joe Bruss added 92 yards and scored what turned out to be the winning TD on a 29-yard run in the third quarter at Freeburg. Freeburg (6-1) is ranked No. 5 among area small schools; No. 9 Orchard Farm (5-1) had allowed only three points before Friday.

Parkway Central 41, Fox 3: Wes McRaven had three touchdown passes and Corey Murphy rushed for two TDs as the Colts won a Suburban West Conference game at Fox. Murphy's second TD came on an 82-yard run to help 17th-ranked Central improve to 4-2. Fox is 2-4.

Waterloo 21, Carlyle 7: Tony Frierdich scored on a 26-yard run in the second quarter to help give Waterloo a 14-7 lead at halftime, and the visiting Bulldogs went on to win the Cahokia Conference game. Waterloo and Carlyle each has a 5-2 record.

Lindbergh 42, Rockwoods Marquette 0: Jason Chambers started the rout by scoring two of his three touchdowns on first-quarter rushes. The victory evened visiting Lindbergh's record at 3-3; Marquette fell to 1-5. …
