Concerned College Plans Budget Early Two New Buildings, Adding Programs Are Factors

Concerned about opening two more buildings and adding eight academic programs, St. Charles County Community College officials have started working on next year's budget six months early.

"At this point, if the college didn't have a reserve to call on, I would be very uneasy about plans for 1995-96," said Donald D. Shook, the college president. "Preliminary work shows revenue projections fall way below projections for expenditures."

In recent years, the college's income has leveled off as state money generally was targeted to specific uses, property tax income has increased only slightly and enrollment has stabilized, Shook told trustees on Tuesday.

But in the budget year starting July 1, the college will have more expenses as it offers several new degree and certificate programs and opens another classroom building and a fine arts center. College administrators will take action in four areas, he said.

The college will try to reverse enrollment decreases in the spring by concentrating on retaining students from fall semester. …
