Eating and Sleeping Your Way around Scotland's Firth of Forth

Article excerpt

YOUR TRAVEL AGENT can provide information on golfing tours in Scotland, which usually include a van and driver and five days of golf and start at $2,000 each for a week (air fare, lunches and dinners not included). Doing our own driving and staying at excellent inns, we spent two weeks in Scotland in September for under $2,800 each, including airfare from St. Louis and all meals.

If you want to do it yourself, get:

A guide book to Scotland (to decide what you want to see).

A first-rate map (I like the Collins Road Atlas of Britain, 10 1/2 by 14 1/2 inches, which has little flags marking all those golf courses).

A book on British country inns.

A fold-up "Golf in Scotland" map, which you can get with a $12 check sent to The Map Store Inc., 293 Hopewell Drive, Powell, Ohio, 43065 (telephone (614) 848-3232 and fax (614) 848-5045). The map shows the major courses and, on the other side, gives information on each. tt

Aucterhouse (6 miles west of Dundee, off B954): The Old Mansion House Hotel boasts charmingly decorated bedrooms and common areas, fresh flowers in every room, a lawn tennis court (loaner balls and rackets? Of course), heated swimming pool, squash court and pretty woods for a before-dinner walk. The food Bnis sublime.wpdc But it is the genuine welcome given by Eva and Nigel Bell, their total and cheerful willingness to go the extra mile, that makes one feel so coddled.owtt And if you went to Central Casting and said, "I want a bunch of people who have wonderful pink cheeks, can move fast and - most important - have a sort of innocence about them," they would send you the staff at The Old Mansion House.a 78 ( $124 each for room, dinner and a glorious breakfast). …
