Jeremy Minter, a senior at St. Charles West High School, is in the spotlight for his leadership, academic success and school involvement.

For two years, he has been drum major of the school's marching band. Each weekday morning at 6:45, Jeremy and the band gather on the football field for practice. In all, they practice about 15 to 20 hours a week. Then there are the band competitions and performances at home football games.

It's a long schedule, but worth it. Jeremy is glad he heeded an instructor's advice to try out for drum major, a position for which he had to be interviewed by the band. Jeremy said the experience has been good: "I won't be afraid to take chances or risk failure - I'll do it anyway."

The band has had its share of success. Several weeks ago, it placed second in the silver division at the Greater St. Louis Marching Band Festival at Busch Stadium. The drum line captured first place, and the band was also recognized for its outstanding marching and music performance.

Jeremy said he's never nervous in such competitions. With his back to the crowd, he gets "zoned into the music, and nothing else matters."

Jeremy, who also plays trumpet, notes that being in the band is a great way to make new friends. He recalls a band trip to Chicago in his freshman year. "We were on the buses each way for six hours, and it's a good chance to learn about people," said Jeremy.

Jeremy played softball on the school team in his freshman and sophomore years. Three years ago, he was inducted into the National Honor Society. He works at Dierbergs Markets as a courtesy clerk.

He plans to study engineering, possibly in the field of aerospace. He's not sure what college or university he'll attend, but he would like to go to Washington University or Parks College of St. Louis University.

Jeremy lives in St. Charles with his mom, Beverly Minter, his brother Matt, 25, and his sister Bridget, 20. …
