IRS Getting Tough On Missing Numbers

The Internal Revenue Service says it will delay payment of tax refunds for citizens who fail to include proper Social Security numbers for dependents.

A growing incidence of fraud has moved the IRS to change its policy of processing forms with missing or incorrect Social Security numbers and asking for corrections with the refunds.

30-year Rates Jump Up

Thirty-year mortgage rates jumped to 9.19 percent this week, the highest in more than three years.

The rate, which matches that of Aug. 16, 1991, was up from 9.05 percent last week, the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corp. said Thursday.

The rate on 15-year fixed-rate mortgages rose to 8.67 percent from 8.51 percent - the highest since March 20, 1992. Adjustable rates climbed to 6.01 percent from 5.91 percent. Reuters
