College's New Theater, Fine Arts Center Called a Great Step Forward for County

Good things come to those who wait - or so contends the chairman of the Art Department at St. Charles County Community College.

Gordon Goulden, art chairman, said the opening of a theater and fine arts center at the community college would enhance the arts in St. Charles County.

Three years ago, in the first stage of campus building, the college trustees decided they couldn't afford an arts wing on the general academic building. "When the wing to that building was cut off, I felt like I lost my left arm," Goulden said. "I thought, `Oh, no. There you go again. Cut the arts.'

"Now I have all kinds of space that I wouldn't have had before," Goulden said. "The board supports our work. We have a highly energized and motivated arts department and supportive college board (members who) are interested in promoting fine arts. There is a need in the community for this kind of facility."

The fine-arts center should open next fall, together with another building for classrooms and continuing education. The darling of the center may be its 407-seat theater, but the building will have art rooms, music rooms, rehearsal areas and galleries. …
