Claggett Makes Waldman's Mission Easy

Article excerpt

Included in H Waldman's mission statement for every St. Louis University basketball game: Find the teammate with the hot shooting hand and get him the ball.

Easy mission Thursday night.

"Especially when Erwin is yelling for it," Waldman said.

He probably could hear Erwin Claggett's paws a-sizzling in a 90-49 victory over Sacramento State before 12,712 fans at Kiel Center.

Claggett led the Billikens (2-0) with 25 points in only 24 minutes of action. He scored 23 during 17 minutes of play in the first half, when he nailed eight of 11 shots from the field and seven of 10 3-pointers. That tied a SLU record Claggett already shared with Ramon Trice.

"Let's not overanalyze Claggett's shooting," SLU coach Charlie Spoonhour said wryly. "The ball would go real high, and then it went in."

Though Claggett never keeps track while he's gunning, he had a clear idea that his shot was leaving the net in tatters. He felt a tad more confident than Sunday, when he missed seven of 11 from the field in a victory over Bradley.

"I felt a lot better in warm-ups," Claggett said. "I wanted to learn from the experience of the Bradley game."

Hard for the Billikens to tell what exactly they learned from pounding Sacramento State (0-3). The Hornets have lost 27 consecutive games and all 51 they have played on the road since moving to Division I three years ago.

They made only 31 percent of their shots in the first half - a big dip from their 51 percent success in Tuesday's 18-point loss at Minnesota - and turned the ball over 22 times against the Billikens.

"They played to their abilities," Sacramento State coach Don Newman said. "But we didn't stop the things we needed to stop."

SLU reserves Eric Jones, Corey Grays, Sekeue Barentine, Carlos McCauley and Carl Turner played an average of 14 minutes and contributed 28 points. Those five will play less Monday, when the Bills visit Southern Illinois-Carbondale. …
