Corcoran, Odenwald Seek Study on Raising Pay for Jury Service

St. Louis County officials say they will look into raising the $10-a-day pay of people called to jury duty.

County Council members George "Jerry" Corcoran of St. Ann, D-2nd District, and Kurt Odenwald of Shrewsbury, R-5th District, asked for a study of the issue. They made the request on Monday at a meeting of the council's Committee of the Whole which was studying the $258.2 million budget County Executive George "Buzz" Westfall proposed for the year beginning Jan. 1.

The two council members said they received many complaints from constituents about the low pay for jury service, particularly when parking was expensive and often hard to find. Some companies pay workers while they are on jury duty, but many do not.

James Baker, the director of administration, said his office would study the issue. Council members questioned department heads during the all-day meeting. Topics discussed included:
