Just like that, 2,557 guns were reduced to molten metal and millions of dollars worth of illegal drugs were obliterated Monday morning at the Laclede Foundry in Alton.

The weapons, in burlap bags, and the narcotics, in paper evidence bags, were hoisted 40 feet up in the air in a large flat pan by a huge overhead crane and dumped into a raging, open furnace.

The furnace was heated to 3,100 degrees Fahrenheit by two protruding electrodes as big as torpedos.

The arc from the electrodes gave off a thunderous roar and made the vast, dark, dank foundry look like the set of a science fiction movie.

A dozen men with hardhats and earplugs looked on.
