2nd Area Student Is Rhodes Scholar Pattonville High Graduate Wins Honor

The St. Louis area can claim a second Rhodes scholar this year.

Brent Roam, 23, a 1989 graduate of Pattonville High School, is one of 32 American college students to get Rhodes scholarships this year. They will study for a year or more in Oxford, England.

Another St. Louis area student, Meiling Hazelton of University City, was also among the winners.

"I was overjoyed and relieved," Roam said Tuesday night. "My heart was pounding so hard I thought it would knock the buttons loose from my shirt.

"I am humbled and honored. It is the greatest scholarship in the world."

Roam's family moved to Phoenix two years ago, and the official announcement of Rhodes scholars lists his home there.

Roam credits much of his success to the faculty at Pattonville High School. He said Stacey Gaal, his social studies teacher, was the first person to take him to hear the St. Louis Symphony.

"They helped me realize my potential," he said.

Roam lived in the St. Louis area nearly 11 years and spent 8 1/2 years in Pattonville schools. He was senior class president and a star wrestler.

Roam studied at the University of Missouri at Columbia in 1991 and 1992. …
