Politics at Play in Golf Course Plan, Residents Say

Some residents in far west St. Louis County say the County Planning Commission and the St. Louis County Council will, for political reasons, approve a request by the JMB No. 2 LLC for permission to turn the Cherry Hills Golf Course into a subdivision of almost 600 houses.

At a public hearing on Monday, the residents charged that commissioners and council members had already made up their minds in favor of the project because of the campaign contributions and political influence of the three builders involved in the project - J.H. Berra Construction, the Jones Co., and Mayer Homes Inc.

But John P. King, zoning attorney for the developer, called the charge unfair. He said the county has turned down requests from the developer and modified them.

The developer wants to build 426 single-family houses and 159 multi-family units on the 155-acre golf course near Manchester Road and Highway 100.

As one resident urged the commission to recommend rejection of the project, another called out from the back of the council chamber, "Lady, give it up. …
