Doug Newman, a mainstay on KMOX radio news for 18 years, died Monday (Dec. 26, 1994) of a heart ailment at St. Anthony's Medical Center in south St. Louis County. He was 72.

In recent months, he lived in Mehlville. But he lived for years in a blufftop house overlooking the Mississippi River near Kimmswick.

Mr. Newman - his full name was Douglas F. Newman - was a native of St. Louis. At Beaumont High School, he played baseball well enough to attract the attention of the old St. Louis Browns.

But World War II intervened, and Mr. Newman went off to the Pacific in the Marine Corps. When he returned, he chose radio over baseball.

After a stint at radio school, he went to work briefly for WEW. Then he moved to KXOK and, in 1956, to KMOX, where he settled in for 18 years.

Mr. Newman's career at KMOX ended in a shakeup in 1974, in the reign of general manager Robert Hyland, who has since died.

Mr. Newman insisted that Hyland had fired him because of his union activity; Hyland denied that allegation. …
