Body Of 1 Algerian Hijacker Identified

French investigators have identified the body of one of four Muslim extremist hijackers killed by French commandos who stormed a seized Air France airliner in Marseille, Interior Ministry sources said Thursday.

They identified the guerrilla as Makhlous ben Guettaf, 25, from el-Arach, Algeria.

The bodies of the three other gunmen shot dead Monday were still being identified, the sources said. Investigators were trying to compare the fingerprints of the dead men with files in Algeria.

The outlawed Armed Islamic Group, the most violent of Algerian extremist groups, claimed responsibility for the 54-hour hijacking which began Saturday in Algiers. The gunmen fatally shot three hostages before demanding that the airliner be flown to Marseille, where a crack French anti-terrorist unit stormed the Airbus A-300, freeing the 171 passengers and crew members.

Israeli Cooperation On Fighter Jet Denied

China denied on Thursday a U.S. newspaper report that Israel was helping China build an advanced combat aircraft with U.S. technology.

"There is no cooperation in this field," said Shen Guofang, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman. "The report has no basis."

Shen had been asked to comment on a Los Angeles Times report that U.S. technology developed for a now-scrapped, joint U.S.-Israeli fighter was being used for the project.

On Wednesday, the newspaper quoted unidentified U.S. officials as saying they had confirmed Israel's role in helping to build the aircraft and were concerned about the move, which one expert described as "ominous."

The newspaper said the new Chinese plane would be comparable to the U.S. military's F-16 Flacon fighter and would be based on the Lavi fighter, a joint project between the United States and Israel that was scrapped seven years ago.
