Jackpot Winner Vanishes; Casino Owners Are Baffled

Many players called, but Argosy Riverside Casino officials said Tuesday that they'd failed to find the the person who walked away from a $10,000 slot machine payoff.

Casino officials have asked the Missouri Gaming Commission for a ruling on what to do with the money, said acting general manager Phil Saluter.

Saluter said Argosy is proposing that the money be given back to the boat's players in the form of promotions, and that some of it be given to charity.

The casino has reviewed videotape from surveillance records and searched computer records connected to the machine without being able to identify the winner.

Saluter said the best hope was that the winner had used an Argosy Preferred Card. The card lets frequent players accumulate points toward such rewards as free dinners and generates a complete computer account whenever a game is played.

"It's a total mystery," Saluter said. "The machine has bells, it has lights on it. We immediately respond to that. …
