Committee Recommends Adding Baseball Franchises

Baseball's expansion committee recommended on Friday that two teams be added and begin play by the 1997 or '98 season, and two more clubs be added shortly thereafter. Phoenix and St. Petersburg, Fla., are expected to get the next two teams. Orlando, Fla., and Northern Virginia also are vying for franchises.

Owners are expected to give expansion the go-ahead at a meeting the week of Jan. 30 or the following week. Final approval of the franchises is expected in Palm Beach, Fla., from March 7-9. The franchises are expected to cost at least $125 million. BASEBALL Cubs' Sosa Arrested For Assault

Chicago Cubs outfielder Sammy Sosa was freed on bail after being arrested on assault charges in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Sosa, 26, and his bodyguard were accused of beating up a man, 20, at the entrance to a disco in the exclusive Naco district of the capital city.

Boston third baseman Scott Cooper and Bryan Oelkers, a former big-league pitcher, will sign autographs at a baseball card show today at Pattonville High to raise money for the athletic department. The sessions run from 10:30 a.m.-noon and 1-2:30 p.m. FOOTBALL Former Bengal Woods Pleads Innocent

Former Cincinnati Bengals running back Ickey Woods pleaded innocent to carrying a concealed weapon and drug possession. Woods was arrested Thursday after police stopped him for allegedly speeding on Interstate 75 in a suburb of Cincinnati. The concealed weapon charge is a felony and the drug charge is a misdemeanor, the officer said. Woods played with the Bengals from 1988 to 1990.

Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Butch Davis reportedly met with Los Angeles Raiders managing general partner Al Davis to discuss the job now held by Art Shell, The Dallas Morning News and Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported. Other NFL teams reportedly interested in Davis include Philadelphia and Denver. Another opening is at the U. of Miami, where Davis was an assistant to Jimmy Johnson. …
