Potvin's 43 Saves Help Leafs Beat Dallas 2-1

Felix Potvin stopped 43 shots as the Toronto Maple Leafs spoiled the Dallas Stars' home opener with a 2-1 victory Monday before a sellout crowd of 16,924 at Reunion Arena.

Potvin stopped all six of Dallas' power-play opportunities. He made his best effort at 6:27 with a glove save of Kevin Hatcher's slap shot.

Todd Gill's unassisted power-play goal gave the Leafs a 2-0 lead after two periods. Gill beat Craig Ludwig and Hatcher in a scramble around the Dallas goal. The point-blank shot hit goalie Darcy Wakaluk's stick, and the puck trickled between his skates.

The Stars finally broke through early in the third period when Russ Courtnall spoiled Potvin's shutout bid by poking Ludwig's rebound into the net.

Rangers 6, Senators 2: Adam Graves recorded his fifth career hat trick, and Petr Nedved scored his first two goals with the Rangers as New York beat winless Ottawa.

Steve Larmer also scored and Mike Richter made 20 saves for the Rangers. They had dropped four of their first five games after winning the Stanley Cup in June. …
