At a White House ceremony last week to honor gymnast MARY LOU RETTON with the Flo Hyman Award, HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON conceded that in her student days, she had been something less than a standout athlete.

Still, she said, girls of her generation faced an uphill playing field. They played half-court basketball, she recalled, "and I remember asking the coach one time, `Why is it we can't run like the boys do?'

"And she said, `I don't know. Maybe it's because your hearts can't take it.' "
