Greg Ostertag set the Big Eight career record for blocks, and a torrid No. 3 Kansas made its first 10 shots of the second half Saturday and crushed No. 11 Iowa State 91-71 in Lawrence, Kan.

Avenging an earlier loss at Iowa State, the Jayhawks (17-2, 6-1 Big Eight) outscored the Cyclones 18-1 beginning the second half and led by as many as 32.

Ostertag, KU's 7-foot-2 center, said the shot-blocking record is a big deal to him. "I've got a place in the history books here. There's been 97 years of basketball here, and I've got my name in the books," he said.

Ostertag wound up with five blocks, hiking his career total to 231 and snapping the Big Eight record Stacey King set for Oklahoma with 228. He got the record in the first half during a furious exchange under the basket, rejecting Julius Michalik's shot into the hands of Iowa State's Fred Hoiberg to break the record, then batting away Hoiberg's hurried follow shot.

"It just was there, so I swatted at it," Ostertag said.

Kansas has defeated Iowa State at home for 13 successive seasons.

Iowa State (17-5, 3-4) entered the game with the nation's eighth-best shooting percentage at 50. …
