LAST FEBRUARY, Suzanne Burroughs went to Los Angeles Airport to pick up a package for a friend. She grumbled to herself en route, partly because she agreed to the errand and partly because her husband hadn't remembered Valentine's Day.

Or so she thought.

Actually, getting her to the airport was part of Mark Burroughs' elaborate scheme to kidnap his wife for a Valentine's getaway to Hawaii, a crime they both say paid off big time in romance and memories.

"I did it for both of us," Mark Burroughs says. "We had a stressful winter and needed a break."

They're not alone in needing - or wanting - a romantic interlude. The possibilities are as limitless as your imagination and finances. Take a weekend at a cozy old inn or a week for a wild adventure white-water rafting, or get carried away for a day of hot-air ballooning over scenic countryside.

Working a month in advance with a travel agent, Burroughs, a lawyer, booked a week in an ocean-view room at the Four Seasons Resort at Wailea on Maui. Once they arrived, there would be leis, champagne, chocolates and tropical fruit. There would be spa treatments, a sunset sail, candlelight dinners - and privacy.

But oh, so much for Mark to do before, all without Suzanne knowing.

He asked her boss at the film studio if Suzanne could have time off. He checked her date book for any conflicts, ultimately rescheduling an appointment with her hairdresser. …
