Reluctant Zampese Says Rams' Job May Be His

The reluctant head coach, Ernie Zampese, finally could be ready to take the plunge. And the Rams may be waiting with open arms.

Zampese, 58, the offensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys, told reporters in Honolulu covering the Pro Bowl over the weekend that he is very interested in the Rams' head coaching position.

"I think if I wanted it, I could have it," Zampese told the Dallas Morning News.

Sources familiar with the Rams' job search say the job could be his if all goes well Monday evening, when Zampese is scheduled to interview with Rams officials.

"It's always been his if he wants it, but he doesn't ever want it," said Johnny Roland, a longtime National Football League assistant recently hired by the Rams to an as-yet-undetermined position. "He's turned down four jobs."

But this time could be different.

"The Rams people have always been good to me," Zampese told the Fort Worth Star Telegram. "Hiring a staff wouldn't be a problem, because the Rams already have so many good people that I know. There is a definite interest or I would never waste their time or my time."

As for declining past offers for NFL head coaching jobs, Zampese said, "That just didn't seem right at the time. This opportunity would be a little different than some of the others. …
