Ad with `Real' St. Louisans Good for Bronze Medal

A television commercial created and produced for First Banks Inc. by Geile-Rexford Creative Associates featuring "real" people talking about their lives in St. Louis, a Nike commercial showing a shoe-sniffing Dennis Hopper, and a Clairol commercial starring actress Julia Louise-Dreyfuss of "Seinfeld" fame were the big winners at this year's New York Film Festival awards.

More than 9,000 entries from 54 countries were considered.

Geile-Rexford brought back the Bronze Medal in the "Performer-Presenter" category, finishing behind the winning Nike and runner-up Clairol ads. Twelve other entries in the group received certificates for their efforts.

The First Banks spots, filmed in New York with director John Alper, began airing locally last June.

David Geile, agency executive vice president and creative director, said, "Because of the success of the concept, we've already started work on several similar spots for First Banks, which will be on the air this summer."

Geile-Rexford is located in Clayton and has 13 employees.

SHOPPING AROUND: Saint Louis Galleria is launching a new print advertising campaign with a series of color insert ads this week in the Riverfront Times and the Post-Dispatch. The remaining six inserts will appear in the Post-Dispatch and several other local publications.

Initially, the inserts will be supported by radio spots that promote selected stores. Television and billboard advertisements will complement future inserts.

The concept for the insert ads, created by local advertising and sales promotion agency Louis London, appeals to the sense of emotion. The ads are hoping to capture the feelings associated with a holiday or key retail selling season. Valentine's Day inserts will lead off the series.

TIME FOR TONY: Tony Ponturo, president of Anheuser-Busch Cos. Media Group, was named advertiser event chairman of the 1995 Radio-Mercury awards by the Radio Creative Fund.

Ponturo will serve as co-host of the June 14 event, where the creators of 1994's best radio advertising will be honored at a black-tie gathering of 1,000 advertising and media executives. …
