Three Teams from Area Set to Pin Titles

Article excerpt

It's state-tournament weekend for high school wrestlers in Missouri and Illinois. The tournaments at a glance:

Missouri Class 3A: All 13 wrestlers for St. Charles West High qualified for the state finals that run today through Saturday at the University of Missouri's Hearnes Center.

First-year coach Craig Martin saw 10 of his wrestlers reach the sectional finals; eight won championships. Those placements assure the Warriors of favorable first-round draws. St. Charles West is ranked No. 1 in Class 3A and may easily win the tournament.

Annual power Jefferson City Helias qualified only seven wrestlers through its sectional, which included three of the state's top five teams. Helias may have too few wrestlers to overtake West, but nobody can discount the Crusaders' presence. Helias has won 10 state titles.

Here are the top-ranked wrestlers in each 3A weight class:

103 - Ed Sederberg, Rolla; 112 - Josh Perkins, St. Clair; 119 - Chad Hopkins, Kearney; 125 - Chad Doll, Excelsior Springs; 130 - Brian Butts, Carthage; 135 - Charlie Rallo, St. Charles West.

140 - Brad Fessler, Kearney; 145 - Doug Yeager, Raymore-Peculiar; 152 - Chris Kolb, Helias; 160 - Jeff Berendzen, Helias; 171 - Mark Colgrove, St. Charles West; 189 - Nathan Norman, Jackson; 275 - Cornell Robinson, McCluer North.

Missouri Class 4A: Two-time defending champion Hazelwood East is loaded for a title defense. Jake Lapinski (112 pounds), Matt Smith (125) and Jacobi Guyton (152) all are undefeated.

After solid performances the past two weeks at district and sectional tournaments, Hazelwood East regained the No. 1 ranking in Class 4A after surrendering it for a month to Francis Howell.

Here are the top-ranked wrestlers in each 4A weight class:

103 - Ben Garner, Francis Howell; 112 - Chris Maggard, Blue Springs South; 119 - Jeremy Brockman, Park Hill; 125 - Matt Smith, Hazelwood East; 130 - Cedric Brooks, Oakville; 135 - Scott Schatzman, Parkway Central. …
