Barricade Sought to Cut Spanish Trails Drive Traffic

Residents of Brookwood Estates are fed up with speeding traffic and noise along Spanish Trails Drive and are seeking relief from St. Peters.

A resolution introduced by Alderman Mike Snider, Ward 1, at last week's meeting of the Board of Aldermen called for a permanent barricade at the north-northwestern point of Spanish Trails Drive to eliminate through traffic to Salt Lick Road. Traffic from Four Winds and Spanish Trails subdivisions then would have to be diverted to other routes, probably Four Winds Drive.

That isn't as direct a route as Spanish Trails Drive.

"I realize that this is a highly charged issue," Snider said. "It's a difficult decision to close a public street street to through traffic. I have wrestled with this for some time, and I realize this would be an inconvenience for residents in other subdivisions, but something has to be done."

After several impassioned pleas from residents for the barricade, Alderman Jack Hunt, Ward 3, proposed to table the resolution.

"You have some serious problems," Hunt said. "I'm not sure you can solve them with just a barricade. I think fencing and some no parking signs might help. Give us a chance to look at it and give you a package program that will give you your relief."

Others on the board agreed, and the resolution was tabled. Mayor Tom Brown said the situation would be discussed at the next workshop and brought back at the meeting March 27.

But the residents wanted the barricade up by March 17.

Not only are drivers speeding on the street, but they are clogging it up by parking there when going to nearby Fort Zumwalt South High, said the residents at Thursday night's meeting.

John Krist, who lives on Spanish Trail, said he was worried about the safety of his children. "I've got a 6-year-old and a 2-year-old," he said. "I'm concerned about the high rate of speed. …
