Bulging Pillowcase Turned Guard's Hunch into Action

A security guard tackled a youth carrying a pillowcase full of loot and trying to make a getaway after a robbery Monday morning at a jewelry store in the Paul Brown Building downtown, police said.

"The guard did a fine job," said Detective Sgt. Mike Lauer. "He tackled him just like a football player."

The guard, Lamont Stewart, begged off an interview with a reporter. "I can't talk," he said. An official with the Paul Brown Building, at 818 Olive Street, said no one involved in the episode wanted to talk about it.

The suspect tackled by Stewart is 16; he was turned over to juvenile authorities and booked on suspicion of first-degree robbery under the juvenile code.

Police were looking for a second suspect, a 20-year-old man.

Two young men were buzzed into the Levitz Diamonds Ltd. store on the third floor of the building about 9 a.m. Many jewelry shops in the building use a buzzer system so that a customer can be checked out before being let inside. …
