Cat Is Hostile to Her Kitten

Dear Dr. Fox: I have had a number of cats during my lifetime, and three of them in the past had kittens, which they cared for normally. But my present cat Clawdia is just the opposite. We kept one cat from her litter, a male, and she treats him like dirt!

What is with Clawdia? She's so hostile to Catkin - now 4 months old - that we think she hates him! Have you ever heard of such strange behavior?

Your cat's behavior is not really that abnormal. Some cats remain close to their kittens, but others - similar to Clawdia - show no enduring attachment to them once they've been weaned.

One possible explanation is that this loss of interest in offspring duplicates the behavior of the domestic cat's wild ancestors. Or your cat could have what's known as a "temperament reversal" related to her need to control and dominate Catkin.

Don't count on changing Clawdia. Your best bet is to look around for a good home for Catkin, who, if he isn't already showing tension, will soon develop a good case. …
