Senior Series Golf Tournament Set May 9-13 at the Legends

The ever-expanding golf scene in St. Louis was further enriched Monday with the announcement that a Senior Series tournament will be held May 9-13 at The Country Club at The Legends.

The Senior Series is a supplemental tour for professional players age 50 and over. It completed its first season last year and begins anew April 4-8 with a tournament in Beaumont, Texas. The tournament at The Legends, in west St. Louis County, is the second stop on the tour.

"St. Louis has been a strong market and overlooked market for a long time, as we all know," said Joe Basso, general manager of The Legends. "But the (1992) PGA, and other events like the LPGA and the Nike Tour have changed that. We're looking forward to adding this to that roster of quality golf in St. Louis."

The Senior Series at The Legends will have a $100,000 purse, with $15,000 going to the champion. The five-day event will include an open qualifying tournament Tuesday, May 9. Twenty-five slots will be up for grabs in the qualifier.

A pro-am tournament will be staged May 10. The regular tourney will begin May 11. The field of 90 will be trimmed to the top 50 scores and ties after May 12, and the final round will be May 13.

The Senior Series is managed by Global Sport Management of Winston-Salem, N.C. Tournament director Charlie Hough has been putting on pro golf events since 1971. Hough long was associated with the Greater Greensboro Open, as well as the Nabisco Dinah Shore and the Vantage Senior Championship.

The Senior Series was created when well-known Senior PGA Tour players Chi Chi Rodriguez and Gary Player approached Hough about starting a secondary tour for senior players.

"There are so many great and talented golfers who can't get an exemption each week on the regular tour," Hough said. "We needed to find a way for those players to keep playing and refine their skills. …
