Odu Sends Hot Villanova to Cool Its Heels on Sidelines

Villanova entered the NCAA Tournament as one of the hottest teams in the Big East.

The Wildcats had won 17 of their last 19 games, including victories in the Big East tournament over Boston College, Providence and Connecticut for Villanova's first-ever league tourney title.

All of which meant absolutely nothing to Old Dominion on Friday night. The Monarchs (21-11) stunned third-seeded Villanova 89-81 in triple overtime at Knickerbocker Arena to advance to the second round.

Old Dominion, the East Regional's No. 14 seed, will take on Tulsa on Sunday after the Hurricane's 68-62 victory over Illinois on Friday night.

"Everybody was expecting them to win this game," Monarchs guard Mike Jones said.

Jones had 19 points for Old Dominion. "But we just expected to win the game," he said. "I think this win is all about respect. We went a long way toward earning that tonight."

"In the beginning, they weren't respecting us too much," said forward Petey Sessoms, who scored a game-high 35 points. …
