OK Is Sought to Issue $4.23 Million in Bonds

The Webster Groves School District wants voters to approve a $4.25 million bond issue to keep up its school buildings.

On April 4, the district will be seeking approval of a bond issue for the third time in 15 months. The issue requires a four-sevenths' majority.

After two sets of bond-issue proposals totaling $6.3 million were rejected by voters last year, officials scaled back the bond issue to $4.25 million, so that no tax increase would be needed to retire the bonds. The earlier proposals required a small tax increase.

The only new construction would be at Hixson Junior High School, where space would be reworked to gain six classrooms, says Associate Superintendent Jerry Knight.

The school would be changed to fit a middle-school concept, he said. Classrooms for each grade would be clustered. Science rooms, now in one area, would be moved into separate clusters for the sixth, seventh and eighth grades. The library would be renovated.
