SWEDEN Deportation Of Croatian Refugees Halted

Under fire from human rights groups and even a member of the royal family, Sweden on Thursday suspended the deportations of some 5,000 refugees from the Bosnian war. Swedish charities had defied the deportation order, hiding hundreds of refugees in homes and churches and inflaming the nation's debate over immigration policy.

The Swedish government, under pressure to stem a flood of asylum-seekers, had claimed the refugees will be safe back in Croatia. But many Swedes felt a moral obligation to protect the people who fled the fighting last year. On Thursday, the government suspended the deportations until it hears more from a Swedish delegation now touring Croatia. AP

***** BOSNIA Izetbegovic Wants Tougher U.N. Action

The Bosnian government said Thursday it would consider asking peacekeepers to leave by April 30 if the U.N. troops do not take tougher action to carry out their mission. The move came as Security Council members were considering scaling down the U.N. force in neighboring Croatia following a threat by its government to expel the peacekeepers.

In a letter to U.N. Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali, Bosnian President Alija Izetbegovic called for a thorough review of the peacekeeping mandate. The U.N. mandate expires on March 31 both for Bosnia and Croatia. AP

***** GENEVA Italian To Head World Trade Organization Former Italian Trade Minister Renato Ruggiero was named as the first head of the new World Trade Organization on Thursday, ending months of wrangling between the United States, Europe and Asia.

Ruggiero's appointment had been expected since the U.S.-backed candidate, former Mexican President Carlos Salinas de Gortari, withdrew. The United States later supported Ruggiero but insisted that he serve only one four-year term and that the next candidate be from a non-European country. …
