Women's Award Is Surprise to Griffin

House Speaker Bob F. Griffin got a respite from partisan bickering Tuesday night when the president of the Women Legislators of Missouri honored him with a surprise award.

The award also was a surprise to many of the group's members.

Griffin, D-Cameron, was honored for his 12-year record of appointing women to important positions and furthering their participation in national women's organizations.

The award held special meaning because it came from a Republican - Rep. Sandy Kauffman of Kansas City. She is president of Women Legislators of Missouri, a caucus for the 39 women legislators. All but six of the 39 are members.

Kauffman said Wednesday that she chose Griffin for the president's award because he has helped women legislators attain prominence in organizations such as the National Order of Women Legislators and the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Kauffman said she had told only three people about Griffin's award, which stunned the crowd gathered Tuesday evening for a reception in the Governor's Mansion. …
