Some Calls at Pay Telephones to Cost 35 Cents; So Will Directory Assistance

Ameritech Corp. says it will raise the price of a call from its pay phones in Illinois starting April 18.

The Chicago-based telephone company said Tuesday that it wants to increase the price of a local call from a pay phone from 25 cents in Southern Illinois and the Metro East area to 35 cents. The price would be raised from 30 cents to 35 cents a call in the Chicago area.

Also, the company will begin charging 35 cents for directory assistance calls from its Illinois pay phones starting May 22. That service now is free.

Ameritech plans to charge business customers more for calls outside their local calling areas that go beyond 15 miles.

The new business rate still would be below competitors' charges, Ameritech said.

Steve Ford, an Ameritech spokesman, said the utility hadn't raised its pay phone rates in Illinois for 11 years and needed the increases to continue to provide good service. The company has nearly 80,000 pay phones throughout Illinois, he said. …
