One Good Game, One Bad Is a Routine for Panthers

Article excerpt

Mike Rimmer isn't asking for all that much. Just a little consistency.

"We play one good game and then come right back and play a bad one," said Rimmer, baseball coach at Fort Zumwalt North High. "Considering that we've only won four games in each of the last two seasons and we're already 4-5 this season, I guess we should feel better about ourselves.

"But this is a team with a good number of returning players. These guys haven't been real successful in their tenure here, and they're anxious to get things turned around.

"In fact, maybe they're a little too anxious. In certain situations, we really seem to be pressing. Hopefully, spring break will give them a chance to get away from baseball, to relax and to enjoy themselves a little bit. Then, hopefully, we can come back after the break and finish the season strong."

The Panthers, 4-5 overall and 1-1 in the GAC, will return to action next week, playing at Duchesne Tuesday, at Washington Wednesday and at home against Francis Howell Friday. On Saturday, April 22, they'll play games in Alton, Ill., against Marquette and Alton high schools.

"Our schedule's pretty hectic, but I'm hoping we can make that work for us," Rimmer said. "This team has some ability and some experience; if we can just string a few good games together . . ."

The Panthers have been led - on the mound and at the plate - by senior Andy Patzius. He's 3-0 as a pitcher and is among the area's leaders in both runs and RBIs.

"Andy's a great athlete," Rimmer said. "We expected him to be one of our leaders, and he's been doing a great job."

Jeff Bertel, another of Zumwalt North's top athletes, returns at catcher; he was All-GAC a year ago, batting .377 with 14 RBIs. Bertel also will do some pitching this spring.

Senior Shane Meyer, the team's other returning pitcher with experience, will be joined on the pitching staff by juniors Matt Williams, Nathan Aldridge, Brad Cantrell and Elmer Sargent. …
