Round-Robin Ends in a Tie: Pioneers, Warriors, Pirates

The St. Charles Baseball Tournament didn't decide a whole lot.

The weekend's round-robin event finished in a three-way tie between St. Charles, St. Charles West and Duchesne.

All three area teams finished 2-1 with victories over Normandy, the other team involved. St. Charles beat St. Charles West 4-1 Friday but fell 8-0 to Duchesne Saturday. St. Charles West beat Duchesne 11-1 in another Saturday game.

"We're all fairly competitive," St. Charles coach Charles Meeker said. "We had the one bad game against Duchesne. (Duchesne coach Ted Yeater) called in the game and had us for five errors, but it was probably closer to eight or nine. And we had a couple of other misplays. . . .

"Justin Williams didn't pitch that bad a ballgame, but it's tough to win when you're giving a team five or six outs an inning."

Duchesne sophomore Matt Weber picked up the victory over St. Charles, limiting the Pirates to just two hits.

In a first-round game Friday, St. Charles (5-6) got a stellar pitching performance from Randy Horst in the 4-1 victory over West. …
