Article excerpt

Tommy Soderstrom made 45 saves and Ray Ferraro scored twice as the New York Islanders stalled the New York Rangers' playoff drive with a 4-2 National Hockey League victory Friday night.

The host Rangers began the night with a two-point lead over Hartford for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Soderstrom was the difference Friday night, particularly in the first period when the Rangers outshot the Islanders 21-6, yet came away with only a 1-1 tie after 20 minutes.

It was yet another close loss for the Rangers, who played their 38th game this season to be decided by two goals or fewer. They had won five in a row at home and were 6-2 overall before Friday night.

Flyers 4, Whalers 3: Defenseman Karl Dykhuis scored on a drive from just inside the left point with 3:11 left in the game and Philadelphia withstood a comeback to virtually eliminate Hartford from playoff contention.

Two goals by Jocelyn Lemieux, the second at 13:52 of the third period, pulled Hartford back from a 3-1 deficit. Then Dykhuis, assisted by Anatoli Semenov and Gilbert Dionne, rifled a shot past Hartford goalie Sean Burke to make the difference.

Center Rod Brind'Amour sparked Philadelphia with two goals and an assist on Eric Lindros' 29th of the season.

Penguins 4, Bruins 1: Kevin Stevens and Shawn McEachern scored in the second period and host Pittsburgh beat Boston for its 12th consecutive victory over the Bruins.

Stevens broke a 1-1 tie at 5:39 when he jammed in Jaromir Jagr's pass for his 14th goal. Ron Francis dug the puck out of a corner to start the play.

McEachern scored on a two-on-one break at 13 minutes 50 seconds, one-timing Luc Robitaille's pass from the top of the right circle. Goalie Blaine Lacher mishandled the puck, prompting coach Brian Sutter to replace him with Craig Billington for the rest of the period. Lacher returned at the start of the third period and allowed Larry Murphy's 13th goal at 4:16. …
