Residents Rip, Cheer Williams Charges, Several Demands for Apologies Stir Furor

Some residents at the Webster Groves City Council's meeting Tuesday night called for Mayor Terri Williams to resign and voiced complaints about her actions since taking office a year ago.

Williams was criticized at the meeting in an unscheduled 90-minute discussion of the mayor's administration. But some residents supported Williams, said that the charges against her were for political reasons and called for an end to the bickering.

Mary Mayfield, who has lived in Webster Groves 25 years, said, "The actions of a few individuals (the mayor and her supporters on the council) have made a joke of this place."

Council member Dennis Welker told Mayfield, "I don't think the majority of the council is."

Much of the discussion involved charges by Walter Ambrose, husband of council member Henrietta Ambrose. In a recent political ad, Walter Ambrose accused Williams of promising to have a black city manager and police chief in return for his wife's council support. …
