A paltry 11,817 fans showed up to watch Oakland rally from four runs back to beat California 9-6 on Thursday night, but they got to see plenty of action. The players certainly enjoyed themselves - in fact, they had a brawl.

LA Daily News writer TIM BROWN relates the story:

"A's cleanup hitter MARK McGWIRE was hit by two pitches, one in the fourth and another in the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh, A's pitcher JIM CORSI hit Angels slugger TIM SALMON in the back. Salmon had led off the sixth inning with his fifth home run of the season. CHILI DAVIS, on his way to second base, had a word or two with Corsi and then the benches emptied.

" `He started it, he mouthed off,' Davis said afterward. `I'm 6-2, 230. I ain't running from nobody. Especially not a pitcher.'

"Corsi blamed the fight not on Davis, but on Angels pitcher SHAWN BOSKIE, who charged into Corsi. Boskie strained his neck and will have precautionary X-rays (Friday)." (Boskie is, of course, a former Cub; 'nuff said.)

But the last word went to Davis, an apprentice philosopher whose suspect defense (does the name LONNIE SMITH evoke any memories?) surely means he will be a Cub before the season is over. Said Chili: "Brawls are good. Brawls are good every once in a while."

Johnson writes: "Some call it the best form of martial arts ever, the epitome of strength and will vs. strength and will. Others call it barbaric and campaign for its banishment.

"Explaining the Ultimate Fighting Championship is simple: Two men beat each other as thousands - children included - scream their approval with every drop of blood that is spilled. Unlike boxing, the contestants don't wear gloves and there is no time limit. …
