Maddux Injures Knee; Phillies Get a Leg Up

Greg Maddux pitched five strong innings before leaving with a twisted knee, but the visiting Philadelphia Phillies rallied from a three-run deficit against Atlanta's bullpen to defeat the Braves 5-4 on Sunday.

Maddux hurt his left knee when he collided with Phillies first baseman Dave Hollins while beating out a two-strike, bunt single in the third. Maddux wound up scoring during a four-run burst.

Maddux pitched two more innings, allowing a run in the fifth on a double by pitcher Curt Schilling and a single by Lenny Dysktra. Maddux, a three-time National League Cy Young Award winner, left after the fifth with a 4-1 lead. The Phillies came back against relievers Greg McMichael, Mike Stanton, Steve Bedrosian and Brad Clontz. Gary Varsho's two-run single in the eighth capped the rally.
