Rep. Todd Akin, a Republican from St. Louis County, would rather deny health care to 201,000 living, breathing, already-born children than allow an opportunity to grandstand on abortion pass by. And the Missouri House of Representatives seems perfectly willing to play along.

Last week, by a vote of 89 to 65, the House approved an anti-abortion amendment to a bill dealing with sources of money for school nurses and school-based health programs. The amendment reads, in part: "No state employee or agency or any other agency receiving state resources is authorized to counsel or refer for abortions or refer to any agency which counsels, refers or performs abortions."

Missouri law already prohibits any state employee or state agency from counseling on abortion or performing abortions. In particular, school nurses are banned from uttering the A-word; they are also severely restricted about uttering the BC-words, "birth control."

Now Mr. Akin wants to take the current restrictions a giant step further, potentially gagging every medical provider in the state. …
