Storms Blast Illinois Again Grandfather Grabs Boy as Tornado Tried to Tug Him from Building

Tornadoes and strong thunderstorms raked central and northern Illinois towns for the second time in less than a week, forcing residents and officials in a number of towns Sunday into a long cleanup.

Chris Tamminga, spokeswoman for the Illinois Emergency Management Agency in Springfield, said no fatalities or serious injuries were reported from the 12 to 15 tornadoes that touched down Saturday night.

In the tiny Henderson County town of Raritan, about 200 miles north of St. Louis, a tornado was sucking John Livermore, 5, out of what was left of his home Saturday when his grandfather reached out and grabbed the boy's leg.

The elder Livermore, also named John, pulled his grandson down into the rubble and lay on top of him until the twister was out of range.

"Dad said he just hung onto him until it was over," said the boy's aunt, Roxanne Corzett.

A tornado also hit the Mississippi River town of Dallas City on the Henderson-Hancock county border, damaging 12 trailers, two homes, eight farms and the elementary school. …
