7-Student Team Is a Heavyweight in State Contest

Seven students in the Rockwood School District have learned how to throw their weight around.

The students, who attend Rockwood Valley Middle School in west St. Louis County, recently won a state competition that required students to design and build a structure of balsa and glue weighing less than an ounce but able to hold hundreds of pounds of weight. The team set a record by building a structure that could hold 560.5 pounds.

The event was part of the Odyssey of the Mind, a worldwide competition that allows students from elementary school through college to use creative thinking to solve problems. The students selected one of five problems chosen by a national Odyssey board. Parents coach the students in the schools that participate in the St. Louis area.

The Rockwood students are James Groberg, Chrissy Zelle, Christy Spofford, Ben Ronck, Brian McDaniels, Michelle DuPree and Megan Martin.

They will represent Missouri in an international competition May 24-27 at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. …
