Goody Two Shoes Returns

Article excerpt

ADAM ANT is an anomaly of the modern rock radio airplay charts. With most of the top play going to relative newcomers that have only one or two releases out - such as Live, Bush and Collective Soul - Adam & the Ants broke onto the punk scene 16 years ago with "Dirk Wears White Sox."

Although Ant's current single, "Wonderful," has a timeless quality, it has performed on alternative and Top 40 radio like a thoroughly modern pop song, creating the first major stir for Adam Ant since his signature retro-classic "Goody Two Shoes," which dates to 1982.

It's been five years since the appearance of Adam Ant's last released studio work, "Manners & Physique," although another album, "Persuasion," was recorded and then discarded by his former label, MCA Records. Ant has stayed busy working as an actor on films with Tom Hulce ("Slamdance"), Dennis Hopper ("Sunset Heat"), Linda Fiorentino ("Eyes of a Stranger") and Arnold Schwarzenegger ("Last Action Hero"), but he says he never meant to ignore his music.

Interviewed by phone, Adam Ant - the colorful and provocative rock star - sounds very much like someone named Stewart Goddard, whose successful "Antmusic" has allowed his alter ego, which has a bent toward glam rock costuming, a chance to roam the globe freely.

"I never really had any other intention to not put another record out and continue," Ant says, "but it took longer than I thought. You have to try to get the right record together, and that takes time."

And a movie career is demanding, too, Ant explains: "With acting you just have to put the time in, and that's what I've been trying to do, living and working on the West Coast and learning the ropes, really. Trying to learn a bit about the craft, and being involved in a class, and studying. I keep taking each role bit by bit, and trying not to bite off more than I can chew. I try to take each movie, TV show or play and learn from it."

Not only has Ant regrouped his musical career with the current release of "Wonderful" on Capitol Records, but he's got four films in post-production for release in the coming year: "Desert Winds," "A Lover's Knot" with Tim Curry and Jennifer Grey, "A Sailor's Tattoo" with Grace Jones, and "Drop Dead Rock" with another punk singer turned actor, Deborah Harry, from the band Blondie. …
