Athlete Physical Exam Fees Go to Schools

Hundreds of Metro East area high school athletes are getting their physical exams for next school year from a former team physician for the Minnesota Vikings. The physician, in turn, is donating all his fees to the athletic departments of those high schools.

The physician, Dr. Lawrence N. Stein of the Center for Orthopedics in Belleville, is being assisted by several other area doctors who also are donating their fees.

Students typically pay between $5 and $10 for the exam, according to David Rothman, a spokesman for the Center for Orthopedics. Each high school sets its own fee. It's usually less expensive than going to private physicians, who typically charge $40 or $50.

On Tuesday, Stein and his assistants gave physical exams to about 200 student athletes at O'Fallon Township High School, who paid $10 each.

Assisting Stein were Dr. Jay Noffsinger of the Scott Air Force Base Medical Center and two of the hospital's residents, plus physical therapists from Memorial Hospital. …
